Running Linux on Your PS3 Console

Many users are running Linux on their PlayStation 3 consoles in order to have a fully functioning computer. Before you think this is an illegal hack or it will void your console's warranty, Sony actually condones this. They even included an option in the XMB (cross menu bar) that installs other operating systems such as Linux. Also, doing this does not interfere or corrupt the system's native gaming capabilities. It just partitions the console's hard drive so that both can live together and work together without negatively affecting how the other performs.

Sony does not make the installation process very user friendly but they did the best they could with it. The user will need to know where to start and where to go next. The very first thing you will want to do is BACK UP YOUR FILES! Do not do anything else before backing up your data. Even though installing Linux on your PlayStation 3 console will not erase or replace the native operating system, it will erase your saved games. So again, back up your data!

Also, your PlayStation 3 comes in two flavors of hard drive capacity: 40 or 80 GB. This is sufficient for your PS3 but if you want to use your PS3 as a home computer, and if you are reading this you are thinking about doing this really hard, you may want to think about upgrading to a larger hard drive. This is easy to do as the console uses a 2.5-inch laptop drive and an upgrade can be easily bought for not too much.

You will also want to decide on what Linux distribution you will want your new PS3 to run. Sony recommends Yellow Dog Linux however, it will support many other popular distributions such as Ubuntu, Gentoo, Fedora, Debian, and OpenSUSE.

Getting the most out of your PlayStation 3 is possible and it does not have to take a computer programmer to do it. It is not that complex and you will have aa powerful multimedia entertainment center. Visit geekedout.tumblr.com for more information.
